The fifty feet drop from Annie’s bedroom balcony to the grassy courtyard below was easy to accomplish without injury, despite his frail human body. It was getting out of the glass doors without breaking anything that had Merlin stumped for quite a while.

He didn’t want to destroy any possession of Annie’s. She had already given him so much.

Food. Clothes. Comfort. Calm.

A large part of him—most of him, if he were honest—had not wanted to leave her. His body practically locked up into stone, trying to rebel against the commands of his mind, when he stood before the low glass wall of the balcony contemplating his departure.

But leave her he must.

He would not bring danger to her door. It would come for him, of a certainty. No matter how powerful a fire witch she was, he did not need others fighting his battles.

The only reason he’d stay with her stemmed from pure selfishness. To bask as long as he could in the fiery warmth she radiated, the easy affection.

He’d learned his lesson, however, the hard way. He could not, would not, repeat the same mistake.

He’d been disastrously selfish once upon a time, stubbornly pursuing what he wanted rather than truly understanding what the object of his desires wanted. In hind sight, Igraine and he had both reached for impossible dreams. The man she thought she loved didn’t exist, and the woman he thought he loved didn’t exist either.

As his long, brisk strides ate up the paved ground along a wide river, he gave no thought to where he was going, just that he needed to put as much distance between himself and Annie’s apartment as possible. And as he walked, in the relative silence of the night, but for distant blares of mechanical vehicles and the choppy waves of the river, he lost himself to memories long buried…
